My wife gave me for Christmas last year the router bowl bit and collet extension so I could try my hand at making these bowls. They were featured on a Woodsmith show and in one of there magazines. I made the template for the bowls out of 3/4” mdf. The blanks for the bowls are made up of left over pieces from other projects and scraps that I have collected over time.
The bowl in the second picture is constructed of maple, cherry, hickory and walnut. The bowl it the third picture is constructed of mahogany, cherry, hickory and walnut. The over all dimensions of these bowls are 12 1/2” long, 5” wide by 2 3/4” high (outside dimensions). The depth of the bowls are 2 1/4” and the thickness of the sides is 1/4”.
Rather than routing out the entire bowl portion as they instructed, I hogged out the majority of the inside of the bowl with a forstner bit and then cleaned it up with the bowl bit. I used the table saw to trim down the sides and the band saw to round the ends, then sanded them on the stationary belt sander and finished with hand sanding. They are finished with about 5 coats of salad bowl finish and the a coat of clear BRIWAX.
