Greene & Greene Picture Frame

As most projects do this one has a story. Last summer while I was at the Hardwood supplier I checked out there $1.00 a bd. ft. bin and came across a piece of maple that had had this inclusion which is the bottom part of the frame pictured. I just knew that I would be able to do something with it…. Well last Christmas my youngest daughter had a print made of a article that was printed in the Daily Olympian in Washington State on September 7 1981 (she was 7 at the time). The top two drawings in the print are ones that she had done for a school project on labor for Labor Day. I have an original of the article also and my intent was to frame it and now it is.

The frame is from a design that was in Fine Woodworking. The sizing is different to accommodate the lower piece of the frame so the inclusion would be centered. I got in a rush to get this together and failed to reduce the thickness of the side rails by 3/32 which would have provided another shadow line. The pegs are ebonized walnut with mortise and tenon construction. The relief carving on the top and bottom provide shadow lines also. I also did a double mat with red on the inner to match the printing on the top of the article and black for the outer mat to help make the print stand out from the frame. Thank you for looking…..
